IPPC National Reporting Obligations

Image
Hi everyone, I have recently completed the short course " IPPC National reporting obligations" is wasn't that difficult since its just give a bit more detail than the surveillance and pest determination course done before. This course goes into the practical side of actually making, publishing and updating the report and gives all the steps. It's a bit like the blogs we are creating for this course. I enjoyed doing this course. It was very long and very understandable.

Pest Risk Analysis (Advanced)

Hi everyone, I have recently completed my short course in "Advanced Pest Risk Analysis".  This course was loaded with information but it was a bit repetitive of the last course completed "Surveillance and Pest Determination" course. I has explained a lot to me concerning the types of pest how to go about performing a PRA and the types of PRAs for situations among other things. This course gave me the understanding to go in depth with the information to draft my own PRA for the Croton scale insect recently found in tri island state of Grenada. I now have the tools to much more productive in my line of work and therefore making efficiency beneficial to my country.

Surveillance and Pest Status Determination

Good day everyone, this is it. I have finally completed my my online course in "surveillance and Pest Status Determination". This certificate was a challenge I must admit. It's course material was a lot. .... My understanding of this course is that the NPPO has a heavy burden to carry to keep our countries/islands secure and we have so much work to do in my country of Grenada who is way behind on a ton of things. Beginning with laws and legislations to update. Then the true activation of the NPPO to get our tri island state more secure and no longer be a free port for various contraband. Its time we stepped into 2025 and upgraded of ports of entry with modern technology that with the help of other countries we can successfully implement.

The Role of Plant Quarantine Personnel in achieving Sustainable Development Goals 12 "Responsible Consumption and Production"

Image
In the context of plant quarantine personnel roles to bring about biodiversity and while achieving SDG 12 are as follows: 1. Preventing Invasive Species through Plant Quarantine Plant quarantine regulations are essential for preventing the introduction and spread of invasive species. Invasive species can disrupt local ecosystems, outcompete native species, and lead to significant biodiversity loss. By implementing stringent plant quarantine measures, countries can protect their native plant species and ecosystems, supporting SDG 12 by promoting responsible production and consumption practices. Responsible Production: Quarantine measures ensure that agricultural and horticultural products are free from pests and diseases that could harm local biodiversity. This responsible production practice prevents the unintentional introduction of harmful organisms. Responsible Consumption: Encouraging consumers to buy locally produced plants and plant products can reduce the risk of introducing inv...

Sustainable Development Goals 12 "Responsible Consumption and Production" and how it involves Plant quarantine, Biodiversity and Biosecurity.

Image
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. Among these goals, SDG 12 focuses on "Responsible Consumption and Production." This goal emphasizes the need to reduce waste, promote resource efficiency, and foster sustainable practices throughout the production and consumption lifecycle. Sounds great right? But how does this goal relate or involve plant quarantine, biodiversity and biosecurity? Let dive in by looking at the following aspects: 1. Plant Quarantine: o Plant quarantine involves measures to prevent the introduction and spread of pests and diseases that can harm plants. It plays a crucial role in protecting agriculture and natural ecosystems. o Responsible consumption and production can be promoted by ensuring that agricultural products are free from invasive species and pathogens. This includes strict compliance with plant quarantine regulat...

Introduction to IPPC course experience

Image
My experience with successfully completing the IPPC course was quite informative. I was not aware there was so many groups, committees and organizations involved in this sector. It has also brought awareness to what my country's contribution is in all this. Recently my country had a breach in security. Some good were sent from a South America country to mine and the produce was not thoroughly inspected before sent. 25 tonnes of produce to be inspected by 1 quarantine officer. Upon initial inspection an unidentified pregnant snail was discovered moving away from the produce site which was on its own not the best place to ensure proper quarantine. Relevant authorities were alerted and the whole place including the boat was under quarantine due to the fact that there was other goods on board being offloaded and distributed at once. A decision was made to send the produce back on the boat it came with after it had completed offloading. Politics came in and the produce had to be dumped ...
